In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dedication to social justice and being a positive change maker, La Cima Elementary Charter School honors his legacy annually with a Week of Service. The 2012 Week of Service commenced with a kickoff event on Monday, January 16 and culminated in a Community Circle celebration on Friday, January 20. The Bed-Stuy Patch news site covered both events; read more: http://bed-stuy.patch.com/articles/seniors-share-civil-rights-stories-with-young-scholars-at-la-cima (kickoff) and http://bed-stuy.patch.com/articles/video-a-community-circle-that-cares (Community Circle).
In a direct attack on our autonomy, the New York City Department of Education recently chose to dock La Cima's school environment score on their 2010-11 progress report because we opted out of the NYC School Survey. We maintain that, as a NY State Education Department authorized charter school, we are not mandated to participate in the NYC School Survey, and chose not to do so because we take care not to unnecessarily burden our families with paperwork and compliance requests. We're proud to share that Principal Zayas was recently invited to join the first cohort of Sizer Fellows in the Forum for Education and Democracy. According to the Forum's website, the aim of the fellowship is to, "play a role in further broadening each participant’s leadership skills and increasing their ability to impact their respective contexts through strategic public engagement."
